14th Annual Red Poppy Festival
The City of Georgetown hosted the 14th annual Red Poppy Festival on April 27–28.
The annual event kicked off with a concert featuring Austin-based '80s cover band Radiostar. The weekend continued with a parade through downtown, arts and crafts vendors, live music and food vendors, as well as a children's area, car show and 5K. Nashville band Restless Heart performed during a street dance April 27.
The weekend also included the ninth annual Red Poppy Bike Ride that benefited the Sertoma scholarship program for Georgetown ISD, Williamson County Child Advocacy Center and the City of Georgetown Bicycle Patrol Unit.
Texas country band Brandon Rhyder helped close the festival with a concert April 28.
This year's festival was themed "Paint the Town Red."
Chase the Chief 5K and Fun Run
Hundreds participated in the inaugural Chase the Chief 5K and Fun Run, which was held in San Gabriel Park on April 21.
The event was sponsored by the Georgetown ISD Council of PTAs and the Georgetown Police Department.
Students and families were led on the run by Police Chief Wayne Nero to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity and good nutrition. Along with the 5K, participants and guests were invited to participate in a smaller version of a police academy obstacle course and a community health fair.
