Jan. 30 marked the first day of open filing for seats on three local governing boards prior to election day on May 11. The Leander and Cedar Park city councils and the Leander ISD school board each have three open positions. The filing period continues through March 1.

Leander

City council seats 1, 3, and 5, currently held by Andrea Navarrette, Simon Garcia and Jason Dishongh, respectively, are set to be on the ballot in May.

On Jan. 30, Dishongh filed his paperwork for Place 5, while Jerry Perez filed Jan. 31 for Garcia's Place 3 seat.

Dishongh has served on council since June 2012 when he defeated John F. Perez during a runoff election for Mayor Chris Fielder's Place 5 position. Garcia has served as a councilman since August 2011, when he was elected to serve Carl Wake's unexpired term. Navarrette has been a councilwoman since May 2005.

Residents interested in running for Leander City Council can submit applications in person during business hours or by mail to City Secretary Debbie Haile at City Hall, 200 W. Willis St., Leander.

Cedar Park

The city is accepting applications for places 1, 3, and 5 on City Council, currently held by Stephen Thomas, Lyle Grimes and Jon Lux, respectively.

Thomas began serving in April, though he also served on council from 2005–09. Grimes, who was appointed Jan. 10, announced in an email Jan. 30 his intent to be the first candidate to file for Place 3. Lux was appointed to his position in December, replacing state Rep. Tony Dale, R-District 136, who left to take his post in the Texas House of Representatives.

The city secretary confirmed Grimes filed for Place 3 and Stephen Thomas submitted an application to run for Place 1 on council.

Applications for Cedar Park City Council should be submitted to City Secretary Leanne Quinn in person from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. or by mail to City Hall, 450 Cypress Creek Road, Bldg. 1, Cedar Park.

Leander ISD

The school board of trustees has three open positions—places 3, 4 and 5—currently held by President Pamela Waggoner, Secretary Grace Barber-Jordan and Vice President Russell Bundy respectively. Waggoner served on the board from 2002–08 before being elected again in May 2010 and has served as president since May 2012. Barber-Jordan has served as a school board member since May 2001. Bundy has been on the board since May 2007.

No one has filed for the open seats on the LISD board of trustees, according to the district elections administrator.

LISD accepts applications at their main office, 204 W. South St., Leander weekdays from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. or by mail.
