Nonprofit advocacy organization Disability Rights Texas started construction June 26 on its new headquarters at 2214 W. Braker Lane.
"In about seven months, Disability Rights Texas will have a new home, a home that will meet the needs for our foreseeable future," Executive Director Mary Faithfull said.
The nonprofit will be moving from its existing lease space at 7800 Shoal Creek Blvd., Ste. 171-E.
The one-story 22,300-square-foot space will house offices for the organization's 45 Austin employees, a law library and a large meeting room to host events. Plans call for 10 handicap-accessible parking spaces. Austin-based David Bessent Architects Inc. was hired for the project.
Disability Rights Texas purchased the property on Braker Lane, currently a parking lot, from Hill Partners Management. Faithfull said favorable interest rates and funding made building a facility more attractive than purchasing an existing office.
Disability Rights Texas was founded in 1977 and advocates for legal and service rights such as accessibility, housing and health care for individuals with physical, mental or sensory disabilities. The organization has 12 offices throughout the state, but Austin serves as its headquarters. The nonprofit has about 110 total employees.
