The race for the State Board of Education District 10 primary will come down to a runoff between Tom Maynard and Rebecca Osborne on July 31 for the Republican candidacy. Democrat Judy Jennings ran unopposed.
Maynard, who currently serves as the executive director of the Texas FFA Association, received 42.87 percent of the vote while Osborne took 41.87 percent. Jeff Fleece received 15.25 percent.
Maynard served as a classroom instructor for 13 years, teaching applied science, financial management, communications and leadership as an agriculture science teacher. Maynard has received national recognition for his innovative programs in communications.
Osborne serves as a teacher in Round Rock ISD, where she also attended high school. She received her bachelor's degree from Southwestern University in Georgetown.
Fleece is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point with a degree in mechanical engineering and currently serves as a businessman in the technology sector.
Judy Jennings is a teaching assistant at the University of Texas at Austin and earned her Ph.D. in educational psychology while working at the Texas Education Agency on accountability issues.
Jennings ran for a seat on the State Board of Education in 2010 but was defeated.
