The Pickfair Recreation Center will undergo an up to $346,000 renovation, beginning in May, that will bring the facility up to ADA standards.

Located in Northwest Austin at 10904 Pickfair Drive, the recreation center was built in 1988 and once served as the fire station for the Travis County Municipal Utility District.

The City of Austin acquired it in 1998, and it has more recently been used as a polling center, said Reynaldo Hernandez, landscape architect with the city's Parks and Recreation Department.

"Not much has changed since the city purchased the building. It still looks much like a fire station inside," Hernandez said.

Upgrades to the center, expected to take up to four months, will include restroom renovations, entryway improvements for wheelchair accessibility and a new patio. The playground will also get a new play structure.

Renovations will be funded through the Parks and Recreation Department's capital improvement budget for fiscal year 2011–12.

Correction: The City of Austin acquired the Pickfair Recreation Center as part an annexation of a Travis County Municipal Utility District in 1998.
