Southwestern University hosted Pirate Bike Awareness Day on March 21 to raise money for its Pirate Bike program, which provides yellow bikes to students to get around the school's campus.
Money raised during the event will be used to maintain, repair and replace the Pirate Bikes. Sunglasses and koozies with the pirate bike logo are available for purchase at Southwestern. Businesses interested in sponsoring a bike with a $100 donation can visit the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce, located at 100 Stadium Drive, through March 27. Southwestern will provide a list of Pirate Bike sponsors to students, and the list will also be available on the school's website, www.southwestern.edu. Businesses will also receive a sponsor decal to display on their premises.
The City of Georgetown's College Town Committee is also trying to raise awareness for the program. A Pirate Bike will be placed on the Square and will be moved to various locations on the Square throughout the week.
The committee, which is made up of Southwestern students and staff, local business owners and community members, is identifying ways to strengthen ties between Southwestern and the community.
