Comedian Bill Engvall and several other celebrity guests, including Bobby Bones and Lunchbox from 96.7 KISS FM, as well as former Houston Astros player Jeff Kent, were on hand Feb. 23 for the United Way of Williamson County's Bill Engvall Celebrity Bowling Tournament.
In conjunction with the bowling tournament, which raised money for the United Way of Williamson County, the nonprofit presented the Janet Engvall McTigue Advancing Excellence Award to the Literacy Council of Williamson County. The $10,000 grant, which must go toward infrastructure, will be used by the nonprofit to update and upgrade the office's technology.
"Our program has been around for 26 years, and we have only had one technology upgrade during that time," said Robert Pinhero, Literacy Council of Williamson County executive director. "This has a big impact for us because there is no way that we could have that much money for technology."
The award is in honor of Janet Engvall McTigue, Bill Engvall's sister, who served as the former executive director of the Georgetown Area United Way. McTigue died in 2007.
"We really do this for my sister. It was a loss to our whole family, and I don't think people realize what all she did for people in need," Engvall said. "Because she can't be here, this is our way of keeping her memory alive."
Other celebrity guests in attendance included Sean Adams, host of "Adams Theory" on The Horn 104.9, and Georgetown designer Tera Hampton, who appeared on HGTV's "Design Star" in 2010.
