Southlake Mayor John Terrell on behalf of City Council on Tuesday night proclaimed Feb. 21, 2012 as "Coach Hal Wasson Day" and "Southlake Carroll Dragons Football Day." The proclamation honors the football team's undefeated state championship season.

"At the beginning of the season, I don't think a lot of folks just had this expectation that this particular team was going to take it all the way to the state," Terrell said. "And game after game, you somehow persevered and you pulled together as a team. And that is to be commended."

As Southlake Carroll football team's head coach, Wasson was named the National High School Coach of the Year by American Football Monthly Magazine and the 2011 National Coach of the Year by MaxPreps, a source for high school sports.

Wasson led the team to a perfect 16-0 season finish, marking the team's record-tying eighth Texas State Championship title since 2006, Terrell said.

Both proclamations were greeted with a standing ovation in the council chambers at Southlake Town Hall.

To honor the team and Wasson, the monthly magazine Southlake Style is hosting a Dragon Pride Championship Edition Party on Saturday. Wasson and guest players will be at the event for a meet-and-greet with attendees from 2-4 p.m. at First Financial Bank, 151 W. Southlake Blvd. The event is free and open to the public. Popcorn, drinks, appetizers and s'mores will be provided.
