The Grapevine City Council at previous meetings tossed around ideas of changing entrances for voters at the Community Activities Center, extending the 100-foot campaigning buffer or designating a spot for politicking at the elections site.

But the council on Tuesday night decided against alternatives to limiting campaign activity at the center.

"There were so many options that they just decided we'll just see how things go in this election and we'll revisit it later if we need to," said Jennifer Hibbs, assistant city manager, after the meeting.

The council during its Dec. 6 meeting tabled a proposed loitering and solicitation ordinance that would have effectively banned campaigning at the center. The plan drew criticism from members of the public who cited freedom of speech violations and called the measure a move to reduce government transparency.

The proposed ordinance arose after some council members received complaints from residents who used the center to workout or attend classes and were approached with unwanted political campaigning during the spring 2011 election.

City Councilman Shane Wilbanks said people want to use the center without getting harassed. But ultimately, the council on Tuesday decided not to make any changes that would have limited the freedom of speech.

Instead, the council hopes education about the city and state regulations regarding political campaigning will help to improve the election atmosphere. The city secretary will meet with people who pick up candidate packets and review the rules, such as complying with the 100-foot campaigning buffer outside of the building during early voting and election days.

"We will enforce the letter of the law this year, so we're going to give it a shot and see how it goes," Wilbanks said.

Election Day is scheduled for May 12 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Community Activities Center, 1175 Municipal Way in Grapevine.

Early voting is scheduled for April 30 to May 4 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; May 5 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; May 6 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and May 7-8 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
