Hutto is on track to start construction on a YMCA recreation center this fall on property west of the Lowe's store off of Hwy. 79. The Hutto City Council signed 30-year lease and management agreements with the YMCA on Dec. 15 and is set to choose an architect for the project by the spring.
Voters approved bonds for a $5 million recreation center in 2009. The city has budgeted $500,000 of the money in the current fiscal year for the design of the facility but will not issue the remaining bonds until closer to construction, Finance Director Micah Grau said.
The Hutto facility will be about 25,000 square feet large and is expected to open in June 2013. Grau said the architect will work with YMCA staff to determine the features included in the building, but the facility will probably have an indoor instructional/recreational pool, meeting space and health and wellness space.
Until the new facility is complete, the YMCA is operating at a temporary facility at 101 Anthony St.
