The U.S. Department of Justice approved a City Council district map for Georgetown in December. Districts 1 and 5 are up for election May 12, and candidates will represent the newly configured districts.

Patty Eason currently represents District 1, and Pat Berryman represents District 5. The candidate filing period for those seats begins Feb. 4.

A council district map showing the new boundaries is available on the city's website at https://files.georgetown.org/2012/01/council-district-maps.

The redistricting process occurs every 10 years with the release of new census data.

On Aug. 8, council members chose a redistricting plan called G1, which focused on keeping subdivisions in the same districts, said Cobby Caputo, an attorney with law firm Bickerstaff Heath Delgado Acosta LLP.

Although the candidate filing period begins Feb. 4, a Saturday, the first opportunity to file is Monday, Feb. 6. Information packets for prospective candidates are available at City Hall, 113 E. Eighth St.

March 5 is the last day to file, and early voting is April 30-May 8.
