New Braunfels City Manager Robert Camareno will be retiring at the end of May 2027, ending an 18-year stint with the city, according to a news release.

Camareno shared his retirement plans during his annual performance evaluation in November 2025, according to the news release. He said his commitment to the city will remain unchanged during the coming year.
"Between now and my retirement in May 2027, I remain fully committed to supporting the Mayor and City Council, advancing the city's strategic priorities and helping ensure a smooth transition for the organization," Camareno said in the release.
A New Braunfels native and veteran, Camareno said public service has been more than a career.
"Serving as the city manager of my hometown has been the highest honor of my professional career. I am grateful for the opportunity to work alongside dedicated elected officials, exceptional team members, community leaders and residents who care deeply about our city," he said in the release.
Career history
Camareno served in the U. S. Marine Corps before earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He served in numerous financial and management positions for cities in Arizona and Texas, including assistant city manager and director of finance for the city of Copperas Cove and the city manager for Buda, the release states.
In 2008, Camareno was selected to serve as the New Braunfels assistant city manager before being appointed to city manager in 2013. Camareno has overseen various projects throughout the city, including the recently opened 150-acre Zipp Family Sports Park and the New Braunfels Police Department Headquarters.
Camareno oversaw voter-approved bond programs that invested more than $181 million in improving and maintaining critical roadways, and strengthened partnerships with regional and state agencies to secure additional transportation funding. He also helped launch the Ride the Rio! program.
Camareno said they have celebrated milestones, responded to crises and delivered projects that have made a lasting impact on the community.
"I am proud of what we have accomplished, but even more proud of how we accomplished it, through teamwork, professionalism, resilience and an unwavering commitment to serving others,” he said.
Next steps
New Braunfels City Council will begin the process of searching for its next city manager. A timeline and process for that selection will be determined in the coming months, according to the release.
