MyWaste—the application that provides information on they city's recycling and solid waste services—notified the City of New Braunfels that its Mail Chimp subscriber database was accessed by unauthorized parties on April 16.
According to city officials, MyWaste reported that it was made aware of the breach before any emails were sent, but email addresses may have been exposed to someone outside of the MyWaste organization. MyWaste assured city staff that email addresses were the only information that may have been accessed by an unauthorized user and names, locations, passwords and other information were not shared.
MyWaste informed the city that the breach affects 47 users of the app who were subscribed prior to Dec. 23. The holders of the compromised accounts have been notified by the company, which urged users to be on guard for suspicious emails posing as Recycle Coach/My Waste from a domain other than Recycle Coach.
The app provider said it is investigating the situation and working to ensure it does not occur again.
