The city of Leander plans to begin work on the second phase of its San Gabriel Parkway project in January, over a year after it placed the project on hold to build an elevated water tank to meet needs of current and future residents.

This comes as Tony Betis, the city's capital improvements program manager, says construction of the water tower will be completed this December.

What you need to know

In a Sept. 5 City Council meeting, Betis provided an update on the next phase of the project, which would connect Ronald Reagan Boulevard to the intersection of the existing San Gabriel Parkway and Isaias Drive.

He said the city began accepting bids for the project in August, with plans to award a contract for the roadway connection in December. The third phase of the project, which will connect the other end of the existing tract of roadway to CR 270, will be put out for bids mid-2025, Betis said.

How we got here

This project was initially paused in February 2023 to allow for the funds to be used to construct the water storage tank and prioritize water infrastructure.

About the project

Phase 2 of the San Gabriel Parkway project will complete construction of the planned four-lane road eastward, connecting it to Ronald Reagan Boulevard in Leander.

It is intended to provide the Palmera Ridge and Palmera Bluff neighborhoods access to Ronald Reagan Boulevard. The access to this road will reduce and redirect construction-induced traffic in the neighborhoods, according to the city.
