Council voted to add a section to the city’s code of ordinances. It prohibits trucks with dual wheels, such as a dually, or tandem rear axles, such as a semitruck, and a gross vehicle weight rating of 12,000 pounds or more from driving on certain streets.
The rules apply to through traffic, but heavy trucks that need to make deliveries at homes or businesses along the roads will still be allowed to go where they need to, according to the code.
Two-minute impact
The new code section aims to keep heavy vehicles from driving off Main Street or SH 1869 and onto side streets in the downtown area, according to agenda documents.
The purchase and installation of the needed signage to display the new rules around town is expected to cost $5,000, according to the documents.
Council found heavy truck traffic poses a danger to people and the roadways themselves. They also found that trucks increase traffic and impede the flow of traffic for the general public, according to the documents.
