The candidate filing period for the upcoming Liberty Hill City Council election closed Sept. 6, and one application was submitted for the only vacant seat.

A special election was called Aug. 9 to fill the vacancy in Place 2 on council, which is occupied by Council Member Will Crossland.

Crossland has been disqualified to hold office due to a residency requirement. He informed council that “he no longer resides in city limits and has no intention to return within the time of the remaining term,” which will expire in May 2025, according to the city.

Michael Helbing is the only candidate that submitted an application for Place 2 before the filing period closed. While Jacquetta Thayer submitted an application initially, it was withdrawn before the deadline.

A city representative said there are plans to submit a “Certificate of No Opposed Races” to Council on Sept. 13. An ordinance to cancel the special election will also be submitted.

Early voting will run from Oct. 23 to Nov. 3. Election Day is Nov. 7. Click here for more information on the upcoming election.
