The city of Leander is in the beginning stages of establishing a committee to review the city’s charter in anticipation of a future election.

A charter serves as the official record of the creation of the city, according to the Texas Secretary of State. The document determines a city's form of municipal government, such as through a mayor, city council and city manager, and determines items such as term limits, how city council is elected, the creation of boards and commissions, and how the city government is financed.

The citizens of Leander vote on the charter and any proposed charter amendments.

Leander City Secretary Dara Crabtree said applications for the charter review committee were open until Aug. 15, and City Council plans to conduct interviews and make appointments for the committee during tonight's meeting. 

The seven-member committee will be appointed for one six-month term. Crabtree said the appointed committee members will evaluate the charter and later make recommendations to City Council on possible charter amendments.

Crabtree said any recommendations would be considered for an election in May. Leander’s last charter election was held in 2012.
