From tax bills to banjos, here's what residents of Leander and Cedar Park should know this week:

1. Leander City Council votes on the tax rate tonight

The city of Leander is proposing a property tax rate of $0.599 per $100 valuation for the 2016-17 fiscal year—a decrease of $0.03392 from the FY 2015-16 rate of $0.63292 per $100. Despite the rate decrease, rising property values will likely mean homeowners see higher property tax bills this year. The vote takes place at 6 p.m. tonight at Pat Bryson Municipal Hall, 201 N. Brushy St., Leander.

2. Weigh in on Lone Star Rail tomorrow

The public is invited to provide input on removing the proposed Lone Star Rail District line from the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization’s long-range plan. On Aug. 8, the CAMPO transportation policy board initiated steps to cease funding and remove the $2.09 billion rail plan from CAMPO’s 2040 long-range transportation plan. The final decision to end LSRD will be taken during CAMPO’s Oct. 10 meeting, but the public can weigh in from 4-7 p.m. tomorrow at Cedar Park Library, 550 Discovery Blvd., Cedar Park.

3. Cedar Park City Council votes on its budget Thursday

The city of Cedar Park is proposing a $132 million budget and a property tax rate of $0.474 cents per $100 valuation. The property tax rate is lower than the city's FY 2015-16 rate, but the owner of an average-valued home in Cedar Park could see an increase of $101 in their tax bill this year. According to city documents, the average home value in Cedar Park has increased by 9.1 percent from FY 2015-16—from $265,991 to $290,223. The vote takes place at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Cedar Park City Hall, 450 Cypress Creek Road, Bldg. 4, Cedar Park.

4. The Leander Bluegrass Festival starts Friday

The 11th annual two-day event features live music from a variety of bluegrass bands. The festival is free and starts at 7 p.m. on Friday at Robin Bledsoe Park, 601 S. Bagdad Road, Leander.
