Following the collapse of the Hamilton Greenbelt Bridge, which degraded due to environmental factors after 20 years of use, the city of Lakeway has agreed to invest in reconstruction in order to support pedestrian and park maintenance use.
The overview
The Hamilton Greenbelt Bridge collapse was identified in the fall, and further city inspections showed the nearby Smith Greenbelt Bridge was also aging, city manager Joseph Molis said.
Reconstruction of both of these bridges will cost the city approximately $194,950. This amount was included in this year’s fiscal year budget for Lakeway, according to city documents.
The details
Both bridges support pedestrian crossing, with the Hamilton bridge also supporting park maintenance vehicles as they cross Hurst Creek in order to access the entirety of the city’s trail system.
Combining both of these bridges into one project will allow the city to maximize construction costs, according to city documents.
Bids for the project went out in December, with Huitt-Zollars serving as the engineering firm for the project. Ultimately, Alinea Construction Corporation was chosen for construction services.
What’s next?
City Council formally approved selecting Alinea as the construction company for the bridges at a Feb. 18 meeting.
Typically, once a construction company is approved, it will take around 30 days to negotiate and execute a contract, Molis said.
“We’re hoping that the bridges would be completed this spring and completely open for business by the summer,” Molis said.
