At a Sept. 16 meeting, the city of Lakeway approved an additional $230,202 to the $3 million contract for pavement rehab on Lakeway Drive and Lakeway Boulevard.

The gist

Pavement resurfacing on Lakeway Drive and Lakeway Boulevard wrapped up this summer, but city staff identified additional expenses that were not covered by the original bid.

The extra $230,202 was primarily needed to subsidize higher-than-projected asphalt quantities and to recreate the road striping with thermoplastic.

Director of Public Works Dale DeLong said the thermoplastic is expected to last two to four years longer than paint.

The bigger picture

The total construction bid still represents a multimillion-dollar shortfall from the initial predicted cost of the project, which could go to other transportation projects in the future, Assistant City Manager Ashby Grundman said.

Zooming out

The project costs are tied to a $17.4 million transportation bond passed by voters in 2022, which includes plans for road resurfacing, culvert replacements, sidewalk additions and traffic light installations.
