Eanes ISD board discusses $7 million worth of cost-saving strategies

Eanes ISD officials are considering cost-saving strategies as the district continues to project budget shortfalls amidst a growing list of expenditures outpacing its funding.

In order to find $5 million-$6 million to balance the projected 2026-27 budget, additional measures need to be taken to rebuild EISD's fund balance. Cost-saving options include:
  • Voter-approval tax rate election: If called by the board, this would be held in November 2026 and increase the maintenance and operations tax rate and allow EISD to retain $3.8 million out of $20 million from the increased rate.
  • Other revenue increases: Increasing facility rental rates, creating online courses and adding more transfer students could increase revenues by up to $600,000.
  • Staffing optimization: Adjusting staffing structures could net $3.3 million in savings.
  • Reduce or eliminate district programs and services: These would be evaluated to determine which would minimize disruptions. Estimated cost savings vary.
  • Salary freeze: Pausing part or all salary increases for one budget cycle could save $1.6 million if a 2% increase is not given.
The board could commit to a budget plan in January.

Eanes, Lake Travis ISDs receive superior financial ratings

Eanes ISD and Lake Travis ISD both received 94 out of 100 possible points in the Texas Education Agency's Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas rating, or FIRST, marking another year both districts have received the highest possible rating.

The rating is based on fiscal year 2023-24 and includes 21 indicators that assess the districts’ business operations competency, such as timely financial report filings and payments, and overall financial health and sustainability, such as having sufficient cash on hand to cover operating expenses.

EISD and LTISD received passing scores on all indicators with the exception of an indicator for the district’s ratio of current assets to liabilities, scoring 8 out of 10 possible points.
