Several schools in the Lake Travis-Westlake area have announced closures for Feb. 3 following a winter storm warning issued by the National Weather Service for 3 a.m.-6 p.m. that day, according to press releases from the schools. Lake Travis ISD, Eanes ISD and the International School of Texas have all canceled class Feb. 3, but plans have not yet been announced for operations Feb. 4. The National Weather Service predicts the weather will cause significant icing conditions due to a mix of freezing rain and sleet. LTISD and EISD students will not be required to make up the inclement weather day because there are enough instructional minutes built into the calendar to compensate for the loss, according to the press releases.

"I am aware our decision to cancel classes may pose a challenge to our working parents and guardians," LTISD Superintendent Paul Norton said in the press release. "However, after conferring with city of Austin/Travis County emergency management representatives, local meteorologists and area superintendents, school cancellation is the safest alternative for our staff, students and families. In the meantime, my hope is that you will stay home, stay safe and stay warm Thursday."

Extracurricular activities and events for each of the schools are canceled Feb. 3. For EISD, the Westlake High School musical performance Feb. 3 will be moved to 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 5, and ticketholders will receive further information through the ticketing system. The EISD Strategic Summit Board meeting will also be postponed.

The cause of the cold weather is an arctic cold front moving through Feb. 2 followed by rain. The Hill Country could expect one-quarter to one-half inch of sleet and wind gusts as high as 35 miles per hour producing windchills in the teens and single digits through Feb. 4, the NWS said. The districts expect to have updates on classes for Feb. 4 sometime in the afternoon on Feb. 3, the press releases said.
