West Lake Hills City Council extended a deadline Wednesday for developers to submit plans regarding a vacant city property at 110 Westlake Drive, near Bee Caves Road.

The request for proposals was posted to the city website June 19 and originally gave developers 30 days to make submissions. The extension allows interested developers 90 days to create and submit plans for the property, Mayor Linda Anthony said.

After the Sept. 17 submission deadline, the City Council could decide to sell the property to the developer who proposes what is deemed to be in the city’s best interest, she said.

City Attorney Alan Bojorquez said when cities attempt to sell property, the most common practices include putting the property up for auction or out for bids. West Lake Hills, which only owns a few vacant lots, decided to request proposals instead because of the property’s location, he said.

“The city can sell [the property] to the best option, which could be a combination of money, [design] and if it’s a use [the City Council] wants to see,” Bojorquez said.

Council Member Brian Plunkett said the intent of the posting is to see if there are innovative developers in the area who can create a plan that would be beneficial to residents.

Anthony said the city is taking steps to assure the public that council members do not have a personal stake in the sale or development of the property. The public will also have opportunities to evaluate and make comments on submissions after the submission deadline passes, she said.

The 2.46-acre tract is zoned government, utility, institutional, according to the request for proposals, which can be found on the city’s website.
