A gas leak off Main Street and University Avenue has prompted road closures near downtown Georgetown, which are expected to last through the evening of Jan. 29.

What residents should know

The Georgetown Fire Department closed the Main Street and University Avenue intersection to repair a 4-inch gas leak. Firefighters are at the scene alongside Atmos Energy, according to a city of Georgetown Facebook post.

According to Facebook posts from the Georgetown Police Department and the Georgetown Fire Department, University Avenue is closed from Austin Avenue to Church Street, and evacuations are in place from 11th Street to 15th Street and from Scenic Drive to Church Street. The city is tracking additional road closures in the area on a Waze map.

Officials are urging residents to avoid the area and follow directions from public safety personnel if asked to evacuate. Closures are expected to last at least eight hours, according to the Georgetown Police Department’s post from 10:26 a.m. Jan. 29.

Both the Georgetown Police Department and Georgetown Fire Department will provide updates—including possible new evacuations—as additional information becomes available, according to their Facebook pages.
