The road looks to alleviate traffic congestion in the area, officials said at a Dec. 16 ribbon-cutting ceremony. The bypass opens to traffic on Dec. 20, according to a news release.
What you need to know
The two-lane road connects Sam Houston Avenue at Patriot Way to Hwy. 29 and includes a bridge over SH 130 Toll, per the release.
The road is the final section of the Hwy. 29 Bypass project, Georgetown Mayor Josh Schroeder said in the release. The county began gathering community input on the project in 2017, according to its website.
“This road allows through-traffic to bypass our busy downtown and provides an alternate route for trucks coming through our city,” Schroeder said in the release.
What they’re saying
The expansion is “vital to keep the people of Georgetown safe and on the move,” Precinct 4 Commissioner Russ Boles said in the release.
"By reducing travel times, we are ensuring that Williamson County residents will spend more time with their families and less time stuck in traffic,” Boles said in the release.
Precinct 3 Commissioner Valerie Covey said the project coming to fruition is a testament to the county’s commitment to regional safety and mobility.
“Nearly 20 years ago, the city of Georgetown told me their biggest priority was a bypass that provided relief to local traffic in the heart of the city's commercial and historic areas; opening of this section of Corridor C is the final piece of that bypass, and I couldn't be prouder of the county and city's partnership,” Covey said in the release.
By the numbers
The road’s construction stayed in budget at $30.5 million and was funded through Williamson County’s 2019 voter-approved road bond, according to the release. The city of Georgetown contributed around $4 million for construction.
Georgetown ISD contributed right of way, and future phases of the project could take several years, per the release. While the road is two lanes, growth projections indicate additional capacity is required in the future, according to Williamson County’s website.
The road’s ultimate buildout will move forward when travel demand increases and when funding becomes available, according to the release.
