Georgetown firefighters and police officers participated in a memorial stair climb at the Georgetown ISD Athletic Complex on Sunday to remember those first responders who were killed Sept. 11, 2001.
Participants, who also included members of the public and first responders from other area law enforcement and public safety agencies, climbed the equivalent of 110 stories—the height of the World Trade Center towers in New York City, according to a news release from the city.
Firefighters wore firefighting gear—boots, helmets, protective pants and jackets, and air packs—all of which can weigh between 80 to 100 pounds. Others carried extra tactical gear during the climb.
