St. David’s Georgetown Hospital plans to add a helicopter landing pad, or helipad, and additional parking in early 2017. The hospital announced the $1.9 million project Thursday, Nov. 10.

The helipad is expected to help save time and resources when transporting critical patients, according to a news release.

“We have patients from all over the state transported via air ambulance to St. David’s Georgetown Hospital, and a new helipad will allow us to better serve these critically ill or injured patients,” St. David’s Georgetown Hospital CEO Hugh Brown said in a statement.

The hospital will also add 81 parking spaces and is in the midst of renovations to its emergency department, which will add five treatment spaces. The renovations are also expected to be completed in early 2017, according to the news release.

The hospital opened a driveway from the northbound I-35 frontage road in October to provide access for emergency vehicles, employees and patients.

In May the hospital opened its expanded $7.7 million intensive care unit.
