As part of its five-year capital improvement program, Georgetown City Council approved the purchase of new playground equipment for Kelley Park May 14.

The new equipment is larger, and will feature more activity-driven pieces, city documents show.

The gist

With a price of approximately $74,739.70, the new equipment will include a sensory wave spinning seat, three slides, a crawl tube, a swingset and an overhead climber. A timeline for construction was not available at the time of publication. Community Impact will provide updates as they become available.

How we got here

The Georgetown Parks and Recreation Department has been developing a master plan since 2021, when the department held a virtual public forum for residents. During the forum, residents expressed a greater focus on pickleball programs and improved pickleball facilities; run, walk and bike trails; CPR training; accessible restrooms; outdoor education; and facility improvements.

In June 2023, the department outlined high-priority projects for the five-year capital improvement program, according to previous reporting from Community Impact. The list of projects up for consideration would cost the city approximately $64 million.

These projects will be funded through several avenues:
  • Certificates of obligation, which are bonds voted on by city council
  • General obligation bonds, which are bonds that require voter approval
  • Parkland dedication funds, which is a fee or dedicated land allowance collected by local governments from developers for the use and maintenance of park facilities
