Kevin Pitts, District 5 Georgetown City Council member, was sworn in as the new mayor pro tem June 9.
The position was up for reappointment after former mayor pro tem and District 2 Council Member Valerie Nicholson resigned from her position effective May 31.
Nicholson’s first term would have expired last month, but the May 2020 election was moved to November because of coronavirus.
While council has elected a new mayor pro tem, the District 2 seat will remain vacant until an election occurs. According to the city’s charter, an election to fill a vacant position must be held within 120 days of the vacancy. However, the city is waiting on clarification from the governor’s office about whether it can delay filling the District 2 seat until the Nov. 3 election.
Pitts was elected by the council unanimously and said he looks forward to further serving the community.
