Georgetown will develop a new household hazardous waste program in January after Weir-based company PA-jer, which has been handling collection for the city, told officials Dec. 13 it would no longer offer the service, according to a city announcement.

Customers can use existing household hazardous waste vouchers until Dec. 31. More information on the vouchers is available here.

The vouchers allow customers of Georgetown Utility Systems and Texas Disposal Systems to dispose of hazardous waste at the Williamson County Recycle Center at 495 CR 156, which is located off FM 971 northeast of Georgetown city limits and a few miles east of the town of Weir.

The city’s announcement included several other locations that accept various household hazardous waste, which includes materials such as aerosol spray cans, antifreeze, household cleaners, motor oil and pesticides:

  • City of Austin Reuse and Recycle Drop-Off Center, 2514 Business Center Drive, Austin. 512-974-4343

  • Hutto Recycling Center (paint and motor oil only), 600 Landfill Road, Hutto. 512-759-8881

Georgetown officials will also host collection events in 2019, according to the announcement.

The city collects about 75,000 pounds of household hazardous waste each year.

Hazardous products should never be poured out onto the ground, dumped down drains or thrown out with regular household garbage, according to the city.

Improper waste disposal of hazardous waste can injure people who come in contact with hazardous materials and contaminate groundwater and drinking water supplies.
