What they're saying
Heather Stoner, GISD's executive director for campus and student services, said Feb. 17 that campus administrators are going to participate in trainings for the district's communication platform, ParentSquare, in addition to practicing responses to crisis situations.
"What we learned was that the things that we had practiced really well were like—you kind of get into, they have that muscle already built, right?" Stoner said. "So just being really intentional with providing opportunities for us to build those muscles."
The details
In addition to practicing response and additional trainings at the campus level, Stoner said the district is creating resources to guide campus leaders in the event of a crisis and refining the district's communication plan.
She said administrators also made templates for communications through ParentSquare to enhance and streamline future messages to the community.
How we got here
The January bomb threat was determined not to be credible by the Georgetown Police Department the same day it was made.
Per the department, a male caller contacted GPD, claiming that he had placed explosives on the campus.
Based on this information, the department and Georgetown ISD administrators chose to evacuate the school and search the campus for items that seemed out of the ordinary. No such items were located on the campus, per GPD.
The caller was determined to be a 16-year-old from Georgia, and the department stated that it would seek to press charges. A January release from GPD states that the charge is a third-degree felony charge of terroristic threat.
