As the district remains closed for the school year, here are some things readers need to know.

1. Graduation plans

Individual high schools continue to work on plans for graduation, including cap and gown distribution and receiving a diploma.

“Not being together in the traditional way for graduation is heartbreaking for all of us. But it doesn’t change our commitment to kids and honoring them,” Georgetown ISD Superintendent Fred Brent said in an April 28 letter to families.

The district does plan to host a parade for all seniors through downtown Georgetown on May 29 at 9 a.m.

Plans for individual graduations have not yet been posted but will be available campus websites.

Individual campuses are also working on end-of-year activities, such as promotion ceremonies and opportunities to return items to campuses in May such as library books, band instruments and devices, the website said.

2. Hot spots available for students in need

After weeks of distance learning, internet hot spots the district ordered have arrived to be lent to students who do not have access to the internet.

Those who wish to receive a hot spot can sign up online for a time slot for pickup at the GISD Technology and Nutrition Services Center, 603 Lakeway Drive, Georgetown. Families who need a paper-based sign p can pick up a form and instructions at one of the three lunch distribution sites at Purl Elementary, Tippit Middle or Frost Elementary schools.

Only one hot spot is needed per home. The district is also lending Chromebooks that can be checked out at the same time.

3. No school May 1

May 1 is a student holiday and staff comp day in GISD. Most offices are closed, and there will be no meal distribution that day. GISD will return to current operations May 4, the district website said.
