Here’s what you need to know from Monday's Georgetown ISD board of trustees meeting:

New hires
The board of trustees approved the hiring of two new district principals for Benold Middle School and Richarte High School on Monday night.

Brandon Jayroe, who comes from Bryan ISD, was unanimously approved as the new principal of Benold Middle School. Jayroe will take over for Les Michalik, who retired in January.

The board also unanimously approved the hire of Rob Dyer to serve as the principal of Richarte High School after Marsha Winship retired in December. Dyer has served as the principal at Mitchell Elementary School for the past nine years.

Attendance credits
With the May 6 election coming up, the board voted to approve an agreement for the potential purchase of attendance credits.

On the ballot in May is a proposition concerning Texas Education Code Chapter 41, which requires “property-rich” school districts with a property value equal to or greater than $514,000 per weighted average daily attendance, or WADA, to share funds with “property-poor” districts, a process known as recapture.

GISD’s current property value is $531,231 per WADA, which makes GISD a “property-wealthy” district, even though 44 percent of GISD students are considered economically disadvantaged, according to the district.

State law requires taxpayers to approve a method of recapture when state funding is less than the amount due for recapture, as is the case with GISD.

The approval of this agreement by the board is in conjunction with the May election seeking voter approval of the proposition to purchase attendance credits as a method to fund recapture.

GISD Chief Financial Officer Steve West said this item is an official action prior to the election process as part of a future potential agreement between GISD and the Texas Education Agency.

Place 4 trustee Fred Barhydt urged citizens to vote 'yes' on the Chapter 41 proposition during the upcoming election.

"If you want to damage our community, you vote 'no,'" Barhydt said during Monday's meeting.
