As of Aug. 29, the Georgetown Animal Shelter has returned to appointment-based operations. As a result, no walk-ins are allowed.

A shelter employee explained the change is due to high staff turnover and an increase in animal capacity.

An announcement was made Aug. 26 stating the shelter is working to recruit, hire and train new employees to manage the workload.

The newsletter also stated all stray and lost animals will be accepted during normal business hours by appointment only, provided there is space at the shelter.

Additionally, owners who are looking for lost pets should complete a lost pet report at pets.georgetown.org/lost-pets-2 or email a description to [email protected].

Surrendered animals will be accepted only on an emergency basis to minimize the number of animals coming into the shelter, according to the announcement.

Adoptions are also appointment based. Those interested can view dogs and cats available for adoption at pets.georgetown.org/available-pets/.

To make an appointment, call 512-930-3592 or email [email protected].

The shelter’s hours are:

  • Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays: 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

  • Thursdays: 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

  • Sundays through Sept. 4: noon.-4 p.m.

  • Sundays beginning Sept. 11: closed

  • Labor Day: closed
