Section of North Austin Avenue in Georgetown reclassified as minor arterial

Part of North Austin Avenue has been changed from a major arterial to a minor arterial due to upcoming area road changes.

Georgetown City Council approved an amendment June 11 in the transportation plan section of the city’s comprehensive plan to reclassify North Austin Avenue between FM 971 and Lakeway Drive/N.E. Inner Loop.

The Texas Department of Transportation recently announced plans for construction of the I-35 northbound frontage road from Williams Drive, which will provide a parallel route to North Austin Avenue less than one-fourth of a mile away, a staff report by Transportation Planner Ray Miller Jr. said.

With significant changes occurring along the corridor with the new I-35 frontage road and limited growth in trips anticipated on the North Austin Avenue corridor, city staff initiated the amendment to reclassify the road and reduce the minimum right of way needed, the report said.

A map of the reclassified section of road was also provided:
