Georgetown officials are cleared to close deals with buyers of two city-owned downtown properties following City Council approvals Tuesday.

Council members approved a contract for the sale of the historic post office at 113 E. Eighth St. that serves as Georgetown’s City Hall for $1.5 million to City Post Partnership, which Georgetown Real Estate Services Manager Travis Baird described as a group of local business owners. City Post plans to renovate the building to include a ballroom, restaurant and bar, according to the city.

The council also agreed to a contract to sell the city’s municipal court building, which is the venue for City Council meetings, at 101 E. Seventh St., Georgetown, to 3M Square One Properties, which plans to turn the building into a restaurant and micro-distillery. The sale price was $1,155,000.

Baird told City Council on Tuesday that both deals should close by early 2019 in time for the city to move operations to a new municipal campus west of the Georgetown Public Library a few blocks from the Square. Development of the campus, which includes a new City Hall, municipal court and City Council chambers, is known as the Downtown West project.

Following a groundbreaking on Downtown West, city officials put both buildings up for sale along with a city-owned visitors center at 103 W. Seventh St., Georgetown. City Council gave approval to start negotiations with buyers in May but chose not to proceed with selling the visitors center building.
