Georgetown ISD celebrates grand opening of new cosmetology lab

Georgetown ISD celebrated the opening of its cosmetology lab Sept. 19.

The new lab was named the Logan Family Cosmetology Lab—after Gordon Logan, founder and CEO of Sport Clips, a national chain of barbershops founded and headquartered in Georgetown.

GISD Superintendent Fred Brent said Logan approached him two years ago about starting a cosmetology program at GISD. Since then, Sport Clips has donated time, guidance and supplies to help get the program off the ground, Brent said.

The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce is also assisting the district with scholarships for students who are unable to afford the supply kits needed to complete the program, Brent said.

“Without the community and their support, we couldn’t serve our students,” Brent said.

The new lab is housed at East View High School, 4490 E. University Ave., Georgetown. Hollie Jones will be the instructor. Students from Georgetown High School also bused in to participate in the program.

The program’s inaugural class of freshmen entered the program fall 2019. The students will take courses throughout their high school experience to learn how to cut and style hair as well as how to perform nail care. The program will help students reach the 1,000 hours of credit required to receive a license and will allow them to be directly employable upon graduation—following the passing of a licensing exam.
