After two years of pivoting to an October event due to the pandemic, the Red Poppy Festival, the city of Georgetown’s signature event, will return this year to its normal place on the calendar for the first time since 2019.

“After three long years ... we are excited about the return of the Red Poppy Festival and are super happy to have Jack Ingram as our Saturday evening headliner,” Georgetown Convention & Visitors Bureau Tourism Manager Cari Miller said in an email to Community Impact Newspaper.

Scheduled for April 22-24, the free festival will be headlined on the Main Stage by a pair of country musicians, Jack Ingram and Chris Knight on April 23.

In addition to the main stage, the festival will also have two other performance stages, the Mayfair and Celebrate, that will host a variety of musicians, artists and troupes across April 23 and 24.

In addition to three stages worth of performances, the festival will also feature 110 artisan vendors and 22 food vendors spread across the downtown footprint.

Other popular events at the festival include a parade on April 23 at 10 a.m., a Pet Parade hosted by WagHeaven, at 11 a.m. on April 24, and the Car Show on April 23.

The festival is scheduled to open on April 22 with Dysfunkshun Junkshun at 7:30 p.m. on the Main Stage, while Austin’s Peterson Brothers will perform April 23 at 6 p.m., just before Knight and Ingram at 7:45 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., respectively.

Central Texas blues and folk artist Ryan Paul Davis will close out the Main Stage on April 24 at 3:45 p.m.

The city has also outlined details to help alleviate traffic and parking during the festival.

The Red Poppy Lot between Ninth and 10th streets and Main and Church streets, will be reserved for those with mobility challenges and a proper placard or license plate will be required to park at the lot during the weekend.

The city will also offer free shuttle service on April 23 to and from the festival at First Baptist Church, 1333 W. University Ave., and East View High School, 4490 E. University Ave.

While this is the first Red Poppy Festival since 2019, in 2020 and 2021 the city hosted Popptoberfest in October in lieu of the April event. As plans for the Red Poppy Festival’s return in 2022 began to form, there was discussion on whether to retain the October event to give the city two festivals on its calendar.

“There was talk that we might do both,” Miller said. “We did a presentation to council in November and they decided that we would not do anything for this October [2022].”
