It's a busy weekend in the Georgetown area. Check out these 10 city and county-wide events both for Memorial Day and not:

Thursday

'Mosquitoes and Zika'
The public is invited to attend the Texas Master Naturalist, Good Water Chapter of Williamson County for its monthly meeting. Wizzie Brown, who received her Bachelor of Science in Entomology from Ohio State University and Masters of Science in Entomology from Texas A&M University will cover mosquito identification and biology, an overview of Zika and management.

Friday

Annual Memorial Day ceremony
This annual service to honor the men and women of our armed forces who have given their lives in service to our country is free and open to the public. The guest speaker is U.S. Rep. John Carter. Music will be provided by the 36th Infantry Division Band of the Texas Army National Guard.

The program begins with a presentation involving color guards from the East View and Georgetown high schools, the Georgetown Fire Department, and the Williamson County EMS. The ceremony also includes singing of the national anthem, presentation of wreaths at both Memorial Walls, and sounding of taps.

Free pet adoptions
The Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter will be open regular hours on Monday from noon to 6 p.m. The shelter is offering free adopts to all adult dogs and cats May 27-29. 512-943-3322. www.pets.wilco.org

Pools open Memorial Day weekend
All outdoor pools will open for normal summer hours starting May 27.
Below are hours for City pools on Memorial Day:

Seasonal Outdoor Pools: The Village, River Ridge, and Williams Drive pools will be open 1 to 7 p.m. on Monday, May 29. The Tennis Center Pool and Outdoor Play Pool at the Recreation Center will be closed on Monday, May 29.

Outdoor Play Pool at the Recreation Center will be open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 27.

Splash pads: The splash pads at San Jose Park, 1707 San Jose St. and Downtown, 816 S. Main St. are both open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day through Sept. 30.

Heroes Night Out Annual Military Appreciation BBQ
Honoring all military heroes and their families with the 6th Annual Military Appreciation BBQ featuring live music, a car show and motorcycle show.

'Hands on in the Garden' 
Join the Williamson County Master Gardeners Association for its May class which include a discussion about appropriate containers, hanging baskets, straw bale gardening for vegetables and flowers and vertical gardening as well as stacked stone sculptures.

20th anniversary
The Georgetown Schlotzsky’s is celebrating its 20th anniversary on May 27. The business, located at 601 S. I-35, Georgetown, will offer the first 50 guests in line who purchase a six-pack of Cinnabon Classic rolls free Schlotzsky’s for a year as well as offer a $4.99 meal deal all day.

Snakes of Central Texas
A presentation including a formal presentation with a display of native snakes will be held at the Georgetown Public Library.

Memorial Weekeend Barbecue
The event being held at the Sheraton Georgetown Texas Hotel & Conference Center will feature live music from Sean Russell as well as burgers, hotdogs, watermelon, pecan pie and more on the patio at Brix and Ale. Alcoholic drinks will also be available for purchase.

Monday

City closings
City of Georgetown offices and facilities will be closed on Monday, May 29, for the Memorial Day holiday.

This includes the following:

  • Airport Terminal, 500 Terminal Drive

  • Animal Shelter, 110 W.L. Walden Drive

  • City Hall, 113 E. Eighth St.

  • Historic Light and Water Works Building, 406 W. Eighth St.

  • Library, 402 W. Eighth St.

  • Municipal Complex, 300-1 Industrial Ave.

  • Municipal Court, 101 E. Seventh St.

  • Parks and Recreation Administration, 1101 N. College St.

  • Recreation Center, 1003 N. Austin Ave.

  • Tennis Center, 400 Serenada Drive


The Visitors Center, located at 103 W. Seventh St., will be open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Solid waste and recycling
There will be normal solid waste and recycling collection for City of Georgetown customers. Carts should be at the curb by 7 a.m. on pickup day. The Collection Station at 250 W.L. Walden Drive will be open normal hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., for the Memorial Day holiday.

Williamson County closings
Williamson County offices will be closed in observance of Memorial Day. All county operations will resume regular hours on Tuesday, May 30.
