Seton Healthcare Family has eliminated some jobs in its Central Texas market.

The Austin American-Statesman reported Thursday that the organization had confirmed "fewer than 200 positions" were eliminated in the past week.

In response to a question about the report, Seton's public relations director, Adrienne Lallo, said in an email Friday: "The latest figure we have for our workforce in Central Texas is more than 12,000. It is not our practice to comment on the number of employees we hire or release."

Lallo's statement continued:

"We are in the midst of significant changes in our industry and are constantly adjusting—and investing in—our workforce and systems to continue to meet the health care needs and expectations of Central Texans.

Staff changes ensure that we are properly aligned to deliver spiritually centered care that improves the health of individuals and communities, with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable. In keeping with our mission, we are providing affected employees with transition support."

Catholic-affiliated Seton is among the region's largest employers.

As part of the St. Louis-based health care system Ascension, Seton operates more than 100 clinics as well as University Medical Center Brackenridge in downtown Austin.

Seton will replace the Brackenridge facility in May with the new Dell Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas, which will serve as a teaching hospital for students at UT's Dell Medical School.
