The Hays CISD school board voted to accept the superintendent’s resignation at a special meeting held Friday evening, but his reasons for leaving the district or what plans he intends to pursue are still unclear.

Michael McKie will serve out the semester and officially leave the district June 1. His last day, May 31, is when Live Oak Academy and both Lehman and Hays high schools will hold their graduation ceremonies.

Before being hired as Hays CISD superintendent in May 2013, McKie served as interim superintendent for Fort Bend ISD and as a teacher. He has worked in education for more than 30 years.

Chief Operations Officer Carter Scherff will serve as acting superintendent until a more permanent, but still temporary, interim superintendent is selected. It will be Scherff’s third time serving as an acting or interim superintendent in his career with the district.

According to a joint statement from McKie and the board of trustees, an agreement has been reached so McKie can pursue other interests and the district can find a replacement.

After the meeting, board President Holly Raymond said she was not sure what McKie plans to pursue once he leaves the district; he is eligible for retirement but also talked about several other paths he could take during closed session, she said.

“He has all of these options open to him,” Raymond said.
