Updated Jan. 27 at 2:16 p.m. to clarify the board's action Thursday.

The Round Rock ISD board of trustees on Thursday voted for, then reconsidered, a decision to postpone discussion on what to do about its open Place 4 seat that was vacated by Trustee Terri Romere when she resigned this month.

The board's lawyer will "verify if it's possible to hold" an election for the open seat in May, according to an email sent last night by Corey Ryan, RRISD's director of communications and community relations.

Ryan said if the lawyer determines calling an election is not possible, RRISD staff will begin gathering and interviewing applicants for the vacant position. The board then could take action on appointing someone to take the Place 4 position on Feb. 9.

Trustees had initially voted, 4-3, during a Thursday workshop to postpone their discussion until the board's next regular meeting on Feb. 16. Later that night, they chose to reconsider the vote.

With Romere's resignation, RRISD trustees can replace her by either appointing a new board member or holding a special election.

Romere's term ends in 2018. She was first elected to the board in 2010.

RRISD has seven trustee positions on its board, which is responsible for adopting district policies, employing and evaluating the superintendent, approving the budget and capital improvement plans and setting the tax rate, according to the district.

Trustees are elected at-large by voters and serve staggered four-year terms.

According to state law, the RRISD board has 180 days to fill a vacant seat after a trustee steps down. That would set a deadline of July 18 for the board to replace Romere.

Although she has resigned, Romere will continue to sit on the board until a replacement is sworn in. Romere said Thursday she was willing to do so to help the process work smoothly.
