The San Marcos CISD board of trustees will meet Jan. 19 to discuss interim superintendent candidates and construction issues at the new Bonham Prekindergarten School campus, 1225 Hwy. 123, San Marcos.
“Even though this board has not coalesced around a candidate, it’s been encouraging that we’ve had strong candidates continue to apply,” Arredondo said of the interim search, which has been ongoing for more than a month. “We have options. Just talking with other trustees we’re putting all options on the table going into the meeting. We’re not ruling anyone out.”
In addition to Greg Jung and Marc Walker, two candidates who have been interviewed by the board, Hector Montenegro, Jesus Chavez and Ann Dixon have each sent resumes and letters of interest to the board.
Jung is a former Dripping Springs ISD assistant superintendent.
Walker formerly led Comal ISD as superintendent.
Chavez previously served as superintendent of Round Rock ISD from February 2006 to December 2013.
Dixon previously served as superintendent for San Marcos CISD from 2001-02, according to the district’s website.
Montenegro previously served as San Marcos CISD superintendent from 1996 to 2001 and currently works as a district senior advisor for a Chicago-based nonprofit.
Arredondo said he is optimistic the board will either choose an interim superintendent at the Jan. 19 meeting or decide specific criteria to choose the person who will lead the district until a full-time replacement for outgoing Superintendent Mark Eads can be found.
“Personally I’ve been a little discouraged that we have not found an interim as quickly as we would have hoped … but I think delaying the hiring of an interim, we’ve just seen even stronger candidates come forward,” Arredondo said. “We’re definitely leaving no stone unturned.”
The Bonham Pre-K campus experienced flooding three times in the past year. The campus, which was built using $12.7 million of the district’s 2013 bond, has capacity for 600 students. The board will consult with legal counsel regarding the construction issues and potential solutions.
The board will also consider approving a memorandum of understanding with Austin Community College related to job training at the former welding shop at Goodnight Middle School, 1301 Hwy. 123, San Marcos.
