Instead of spending their Memorial Day weekend relaxing, a group of girls from River Place Elementary School raised funds with a bake sale for Wonders & Worries, a local nonprofit organization that provides support to families in which a parent has a serious illness.
The sixth-graders are part of an after-school club, Heart to Heart, that gives the students an opportunity to learn and take part in philanthropy projects, manners instruction and community involvement. The River Place group, started in 2010, is based on a club that began in 2005 at a Round Rock ISD school and is staffed entirely by volunteers.
“One of our club members lost a mom to ovarian cancer,” organizer Kerri Ball said. “Wonders & Worries was integral in giving support to their family.”
