The Georgetown Public Library began a yearlong celebration to commemorate its 50th anniversary with a reception March 16.

Library Director Eric Lashley helped unveil two 50th anniversary logos created by Georgetown graphic designer Nick Ramos. “Fifty years is a great milestone,” Lashley said. “Over the past 50 years numerous people have contributed to the success of the library.” Lashley recognized former library board members, staff members and library directors as well as current employees and board members. Anna Aiken, one of the first library board members and president of the Parent Teacher Association at the time who helped push for the creation of a public library, was also recognized. “She started out in 1965 as the PTA president and her goal was to have a public library here in Georgetown,” Lashley said. Since its opening the library has operated in four locations. In 2004, Georgetown voters approved a bond to fund the construction of the library’s current location, which opened in 2007. “The citizens of Georgetown demonstrated extreme wisdom in 2004 by passing the bond issue,” Mayor Dale Ross said. “We have this incredible facility. It’s very beautiful, it’s functional, and it’s one of the most used buildings the city has. … What makes it special are the people and the leadership.” The library opened March 21, 1966, as a nonprofit before becoming a city department. The library will host a variety of programs and events, including mini golf and exhibits on the library’s history, leading to a finale party in March 2016.
