As a Day Without Immigrants activities ramped up in the Austin area, local school districts felt the effects in terms of class attendance.

The Day Without Immigrants is a nationwide grassroots cause calling for immigrants to stay home from work or school to highlight their importance in American life. Participants closed their businesses and abstained from spending money.

According to the San Marcos CISD attendance office, 88.81 percent of students attended classes today compared to 93.8 percent yesterday. On Feb. 16, 2016, 94.63 percent of students attended classes.

Additionally, some San Marcos CISD students walked out of classes at San Marcos High School today.

According to Hays CISD spokesperson Tim Savoy, about 82 percent of enrolled students were counted as present during the school day. On the same date last year, just over 95 percent were in class. Yesterday, nearly 95 percent of students were counted present.

The Day Without Immigrants is “definitely” attributable for some or all of the attendance variation, Savoy said in an e-mail.
