In our July 2016 issue, we featured Reale’s Pizza Cafe and its famous pepperoni pizza, which is known for inducing labor. Reale’s is just one of many pizza joints in the Northwest Austin area. Although other restaurants may not have pizzas with special powers, they do offer diners the opportunity to try pizzas that are classic and innovative. Here is a sample of a few local specialty pies to try.
Cook’s Spicy Special1. Cook’s Spicy Special Inspired by the chefs in the kitchen, the Cook’s Spicy Special pizza ($11-$22) is one of two customer favorites at Brick Oven, said Donnie Johnson, who co-owns the restaurant with Stan Adams. The pie is topped with pepperoni, Canadian bacon, spiced beef, onions, green peppers, jalapenos, Roma tomatoes, mozzarella and Romano cheese. Bacon N' Shrooms2. Bacon n’ Shrooms Known for its “create-your-own” concept, Flaming Pizza also has a number of specialty pies, including the Bacon n’ Shrooms ($8.29). The 11-inch, thin-crust pizza uses a house-made white cream sauce for its base and is topped with mozzarella, mushrooms, Applewood-smoked bacon, garlic and fresh arugula. Co-owner Michael Lee said customers can also add ingredients for no extra charge. Fig Pizza3. Fig Pizza Black Mission figs, bacon and Gorgonzola cream create a trifecta of sweet, salty and tart flavors, said James Sun, co-owner of Mia Italian Tapas & Bar. The rectangular-shaped Fig Pizza ($15) is also topped with caramelized onion and vincotto, which is a cooked wine sauce. MIA is one of several new locally owned restaurants in Domain Northside. The Contender4. The Contender Rebel Pizza Bar offers this meat-filled pie in 10-inch, 14-inch and 16-inch varieties ($13-$19). The Contender includes marinara, spicy sausage, pepperoni, pancetta, prosciutto and Buffalo mozzarella. A 12-inch, gluten-free option is also available ($20). For meat lovers, the restaurant also features the Notorious X.X.L. ($9), a 3/4-pound meatball. Peproni Roll5. Peproni Roll No, this name is not misspelled but a creation of Double Dave’s Pizzaworks, which has three locations in Northwest Austin. Although technically not a pizza, the Peproni Roll ($1-$1.50) is a Double Dave’s customer favorite and features pepperoni and smoked provolone cheese inside in a hand-tossed crust.
