Dell Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas is about 80 percent complete and on track to open May 21, 2017, said David Shackelford, recapitalization project manager at Seton Healthcare Family, during a tour of the future teaching hospital Wednesday.
Seton expects the hospital, which is under construction at 1500 Red River St., Austin, to
complement health care education facilities at The University of Texas Dell Medical School and take the reins from University Medical Center Brackenridge as the region's only Level I trauma center and a key element in providing a safety net of care for uninsured and underinsured Travis County residents, said Dr. Tom Caven, vice president of medical affairs and medical director for Dell Seton Medical Center and UMCB.

Once the new hospital opens, UMCB will close to make way for mixed-use development. Seton operates UMCB and leases the hospital's property from Central Health.
Central Health is vetting developers interested in taking a lead role in turning the UMCB campus into a commercial and residential district with a focus on health care services and research.
Caven said Dell Seton Medical Center will be a training ground for the next generation of doctors in Central Texas.
"We're going to have a very steady supply of the best-trained young physicians anywhere in the country," Caven said.
Shackelford said the new hospital will be equipped with several technological innovations, including a mobile navigation system for patients and visitors as well as special cameras inside operating room lighting arrays that will be able to broadcast medical procedures to students at Dell Medical School.
"That's going to be very helpful," Caven said about the broadcasting capabilities. "We don't have that currently."
Dell Seton Medical Center broke ground in the summer of 2014. It is built on property owned by UT, leased to Central Health and subleased to Seton.
