Seeking to fill a growing need in North Austin, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul consolidated its offices and relocated its iconic South Congress Avenue thrift store to North Austin.

Since 1991 the nonprofit ran its vintage boutique and thrift store at 1327 S. Congress Ave., but sold its share of the building and bought a new facility at 901 W. Braker Lane, Austin.

“We have a big need out here [in North Austin], and we’ve not been able to fulfill that need [in Central Austin] because of traffic, parking and gentrification,” Store Director Paul Kleypas said.

The Vincentian Family Center and Thrift Store opened May 26 in the former Monterrey Market, which closed six years ago. SSVDP bought the building in December and completely renovated the interior, Executive Director Stacy Ehrlich said.

“All are welcome to shop, eat, help or donate or [come] if they need they need help,” she said. “We want this to be a vibrant community center.”

The Vincentian Family Center houses the nonprofit’s offices, thrift store, food pantry, a computer lab and client services for which clients can obtain bus passes or vouchers to the thrift store.

A conference room is available to the public for rent, and other nonprofits may rent individual offices. Ehrlich said Drive A Senior-North Central now leases space at the center.

The thrift store occupies about 12,000 square feet of the 25,000-square-foot facility. Customers can buy furniture, home goods, clothing, shoes, toys, artwork, and even vintage items and records.

“We moved and brought some of the funk with us,” Kleypas said.

A warehouse in the back serves as storage for seasonal items and sorting and stocking items.

Also occupying the new center is 2N1 Salad Bar & Grill, which opened May 27 for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Co-owners Carlos Chan and Lorena Alcaraz offer healthy salads, wraps, sandwiches, breakfast tacos and omelets. Chan said all dressings and marinades are made in-house and food is prepped daily. 2in1 is open Mon.-Sat. 7 a.m.-9 p.m. Call 737-484-0909 for more information.

Ehrlich said she hopes to turn the cafe into a teaching kitchen and offer cooking classes as well as open a soup kitchen twice a month.

The nonprofit has other plans, including offering WeViva fitness classes and working with nearby McBee and Walnut Creek elementary schools.

“We’re waiting to see what the [community need] is,” Ehrlich said.
