Drivers can expect weekend lane closures on MoPac from April 22-25 to allow crews to pave the final layer of asphalt.
From April 22 at 9 p.m. through April 25 at 5 a.m., the main lanes of MoPac north of Duval Road will be closed as well as the exit ramp for Burnet and Duval roads. The entrance ramp south of Duval will remain open.
However, drivers on the MoPac main lanes will be temporarily rerouted to the two express, or toll, lanes. No tolls will be collected.
This is the first phase of paving the final layer of asphalt on the MoPac Improvement Project, which will add one express lane in each direction of MoPac between Parmer Lane and Cesar Chavez Street.
The final layer of pavement is called permeable friction course, which is a quieter asphalt that also reduces the risk of hydroplaning and prevents dirt and oil from running off the roadway into the drainage system, Steve Pustelnyk, director of media relations for the Mobility Authority, previously told
Community Impact Newspaper.
The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority plans to pave other sections of northern MoPac in subsequent weeks, weather permitting. Contract CH2M is
on track to open the northern section of the MoPac project between RM 2222 and Parmer Lane in early June.
The Mobility Authority encourages drivers to find alternative routes, such as exiting at Parmer to access Burnet and Duval, and check www.mopacexpress.com for the most up-to-date information.
